How to Watercolor an Easy Snowflake Card

I’m back with another Christmas Card tutorial. If you missed the last one you can check out my Easy Christmas Tree here.

And if you’d rather watch a quick demo of the snowflake card, jump on over to my YouTube video.

Supplies

  • Watercolor in blue, purple and pink

  • Watercolor paper

  • Table Salt

  • Masking Fluid

  • Plastic Craft Brush

  • Pencil and Eraser

You can find my full recommendations of art supplies on this page.

Step 1

Draw a simple snowflake in the center of your card. Use the BACK of the craft brush to add masking fluid to the snowflake. If you’ve never worked with masking fluid it is impossible to get off brush bristles once it’s dry. If you use something plastic and smooth like the back of the craft brush, you can easily peel it off afterwards.

Step 2

Make sure the masking fluid is completely dry before starting this step.

DON’T SPEED UP THE PROCESS WITH A HEAT TOOL-YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO REMOVE THE MASKING FLUID AFTERWARDS

Paint the card with water, then drop in your colors. Avoid going back and forth with your brush as this will cause your paint to turn into 1 color. Drop salt into the paint while it’s wet for added texture.

I like to paint just a section at a time so I can add salt before it dries.

Step 3

Make sure your paper is dry first

Brush off the salt with your hand or use the back of a plastic card. I’ve even used a sturdy business card and that did the trick!

Step 4

Use your finger to gentle rub off the masking fluid.

Step 5

Use an eraser ( I like using a kneaded eraser) to remove pencil lines.

Step 6

*Admire your work*

You’re all done!

If you’d rather watch a quick demo, here’s a sped up video (only 1 minute long)

That’s a wrap!

I hope you enjoy making some art this Christmas season. As always, you belong here.
